303 ELT Methodology I

303 ELT Methodology I

Course Outline

This course aims at a smooth shift from the theoretical aspects of language teaching covered in FLE 238 to the more practical aspects of it. You will become familiar with the basic techniques of presentation and a variety of exercises/drills (on teaching vocabulary, listening, speaking and pronunciation) and tasks to reinforce and practice what has presented. There will be observations of mini model lessons and implementation of micro-teaching tasks by students. Skills and areas not covered in this course will be dealt with in FLE 304 next term. In short, these methodology courses prepare you for practice teaching in the second semester of next year.

Materials

A Course Pack, consisting of articles and certain chapters of books, will be provided by the course instructor.

Methodology

v     Active student participation is essential in every phase of this course.

v     Every student is required to come to class having read the assigned material.

v     Each student will be assigned to 15-minute micro teaching tasks in the areas and skills covered in the course in order to practice the techniques introduced and get used to classroom management procedures. Presenters are required to submit the final draft of the lesson plan one week after they do their micro-teaching but are strongly advised to have the lesson plan ready one week before the presentation and to seek guidance from the instructor. The students have the chance to work in groups of 4 for their presentations. In such a case, the group presentation will be 1-hour micro teaching in total.

v     After each presentation, two students from the audience (the rest of the class) will be chosen to give written feedback about the presenter and the lesson using the observation forms. The feedback reports are to be submitted a week after the observation.

v     The mid-term exam will cover the theoretical part of the lesson and will be held in week 6

v     The final exam will be a take-home exam to be presented on the last week of classes and to be submitted on the final exam date, which will be announced later. The students have the chance to work in pairs or in groups of 4 at most for the take-home.
