215 Advanced Reading & Vocabulary Development
Catalogue Description
Developing further reading skills in understanding implications in a variety of text types; responding to ideas in texts, synthesizing information and implications in texts on the same topic and improving vocabulary development strategies with focus on different styles.
Aims of the Course
1. to increase comprehension of written English through the use of authentic materials widely read by native speakers.
2. to enable students to read unfamiliar, authentic texts accurately and efficiently with an emphasis on vocabulary and structure.
3. to improve students’ reading skills such as skimming, scanning, drawing inferences, detailed and critical reading.
4. to enable students to read a wide variety of topics and give practice in different styles of English such as formal, colloquial, slang, advertising and newspaper.
5. to have students gain an appreciation of reading habits both in native and target language.
Methodology
* In the first two hours of class, a reading text will be concentrated on. In the last hour, test questions from various exams will be focused.
* Students will find two advanced level authentic reading texts different from each other in terms of both content and style. They will examine each text in detail, indicate the important language points in terms of vocabulary and grammar, and exemplify these language points in their own words.
* All students will read a book during the term for outside reading.
Materials
* Selected reading materials from various sources especially magazines.
* GRE, TOEFL, COPE, EPE and/or KPDS questions on reading and vocabulary.
Requirements
1. Attendance and participation in class activities will be encouraged and emphasized throughout the semester.
2. For each session students are to bring a dictionary which is suitable to their level of English, present education and future profession. Some of the advanced level dictionaries are:
