FLE 128 (5) SPOKEN ENGLISH II
Aims of the Course:
1. To improve students' academic speaking and listening skills and subskills.
2. To make students familiar with the phonetics and the phonetic alphabet.
3. To improve the language used in discussions, presentations, role-plays and interviews.
4. To emphasize accuracy, fluency, pronunciation and comprehensibility in spoken language.
Methodology:
Students will deliver an oral presentation in groups of 4. The presentations will reflect the review of a theatrical play or a movie. The presenters are supposed to play one segment of the reviewed movie/play in class. The whole presentation should not be longer than 30 minutes. Choosing English language movies is recommended.
Each student will be asked to deliver an impromptu speech during the term. The topics of the impromptu speeches will be announced a few minutes earlier. Every week 2-4 students will give an impromptu speech. The students’ best performance will be taken into account at the end of the term.
Many role-plays will be performed in class. The last one will be assessed.
During the term, students will be listened and recorded in an interview format individually and/or in pairs. The progress of the students will be evaluated.
The students will watch movies and complete tasks while watching. Their participation in the discussions after the movies will be evaluated.
The students will have a small notebook for the phonetic transcriptions of the words focused in class and the tips about phonetics.
Requirements:
